Leaf Malaysia OpCo to build RM600 million plant that can convert plant-based biomass into fermentable sugars

Leaf Malaysia OpCo Sdn Bhd will invest RM600 million in Segamat, Johor in Malaysia to build a plant that can convert plant-based biomass into fermentable sugars.

Managing Director Jason Jones said the construction of the plant would start either in the first or second quarter of next year.
He said the plant would likely be the first in the world to produce fermentable sugars, as well as a wide range of bio-based chemicals that could be used as fuels, lubricants and energy

“This plant will produce biochemical products. In very simple terms, we take plant waste and convert it into fermentable sugar and process it into chemicals,” he sai.

Jones said the company had been doing a feasibility study for three years and had chosen Segamat as a strategic location for the plant due to the availability of biomass and a local partner, as well as the state’s pro-business environment.
