Chiyoda, euglena to build Japan’s first renewable jet, diesel production plant

Plans for the construction of Japan’s first renewable jet and diesel fuel production plant has been set to begin on June 2017 with the signing of the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract by euglena Co., Ltd. and Chiyoda Corporation. This marks a significant step forward toward the commercial production of renewable jet and diesel fuel in the first half of 2019.

euglena Co announced on December 1, 2015 a plan to produce and supply renewable jet and diesel fuels in Japan to be used for commercial aviation and public transportation by 2020. The project, named Made in Japan Biofuels Project, got the support of the City of Yokohama, Chiyoda, Itochu Enex, Isuzu, and All Nippon Airways Co, Ltd. (ANA).

Following the announcement, euglena Co began work on the construction of the pilot plant, which includes basic design, notifications and applications to the relevant authorities, and land preparation of the planned construction site.

Under the recently signed EPC contract, the pilot plant is set to be completed on October 31, 2018. Chiyoda will be responsible for all of the EPC work to complete the construction by the said date.

With the signing of the contract, euglena Co has completed the establishment of the renewable fuels production system, along with the preparation for the production and supply of renewable jet and diesel fuels in Japan for practical use by 2020.

euglena Co says it is committed to making further progress on the Made in Japan Biofuels Project to achieve the production and practical use goals set for 2020. After the projection’s completion, the company will begin to study and prepare the construction of a commercial plant. euglena Co is also continuing its research and development and commercialization to contribute to and encourage the broad use of renewable jet and diesel fuels in Japan as well as to reduce Japan’s greenhouse gas emissions.
