L&T Energy GreenTech and Itochu enter pact for green ammonia facility in Gujarat
L&T Energy GreenTech Ltd (LTEG), a wholly owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), has signed a joint development agreement with Japan’s leading trading company Itochu Corporation to build and commercialise a 300,000-tonnes per annum (KTPA) green ammonia facility at Kandla in Gujarat.
Under the partnership, LTEG will lead development of the project while Itochu plans to offtake production for bunkering applications in Singapore, reinforcing efforts to decarbonise the maritime sector. The move represents a significant step toward advancing clean energy solutions and aligns with both companies’ commitments to sustainability.
L&T had earlier secured land in Kandla for green hydrogen and ammonia projects, part of its strategy to expand across the green energy value chain. The collaboration complements Itochu’s initiatives to introduce low-carbon ammonia as a zero-emission marine fuel, a technology expected to play a central role in the shipping industry’s energy transition.
Subramanian Sarma, Deputy Managing Director and President of L&T, said the collaboration with Itochu aligns with L&T’s broader vision of building a cleaner, greener future. Hiroyuki Tsubai, Executive Vice President and President of Itochu’s Machinery Company, added that the partnership strengthens the company’s ambitions in alternative fuels. He noted that it would also reinforce Itochu’s efforts to introduce low-carbon ammonia to the maritime sector and establish Kandla as the main production hub for supplying green ammonia to its bunkering operations in Singapore.
