Amaravati set to become India’s first smart capital city

Amaravati, the capital of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, is set to become the country’s first smart capital city.

The Indian State of Andhra Pradesh Capital Regional Development Authority and CH2M, a global engineering company, has entered into an agreement supported by the US Commercial Service, the trade promotion arm of the US Department of Commerce.

CH2M was selected as program manager to implement major infrastructure developments integrating digital technologies and intelligent design to transform Amaravati into a technologically-advanced capital city.

As program and project manager for Phase 1 of Capital City Amaravati, CH2M is responsible for program management for developing the city infrastructure spreading over 217-sq km and project management for world-class government complex consisting of the High Court and State Assembly Building.

“India presents tremendous opportunities for US firms, like CH2M, to assist with the country’s growth vision to become an economic powerhouse in the 21st century. As a leader in smart city development, we are pleased to facilitate the opportunity for CH2M to work on India’s first smart capital city, Amaravati,” said Arun Kumar, Director General of the US Commercial Service and Assistant Secretary for Global Markets, US Department of Commerce.

The US Commercial Service helps US companies facilitate such partnerships to promote beneficial trade relationships with business and economic development.

Ranked third in the world’s economies, India has approximately 1.28 billion people and is one of the most populous countries in the world. The US Commercial Service, recognizing the country’s imminent growth potential, has taken the lead in working with the government of India to unlock opportunities for US companies to contribute to India’s smart city development and urban infrastructure initiatives.

As the new capital of Andhra Pradesh, Amaravati, located on the banks of the Krishna River, will become the first among India’s planned smart capital cities to be mobilized and developed.

With a focus on sustainability, information and communication technology and innovation, strategic growth, quality and safety, the new capital city will create a range of economic and sustainable opportunities for residents. Setting a new international benchmark for global economic development, the city will offer high-tech and knowledge-based jobs, making it more globally competitive.
