Kyushu to restart nuclear reactor in Japan

Japanese company Kyushu Electric Power Co. said it will restart its Sendai Nuclear Power Unit No.2 on October 15 and will generate electricity by October 21.

The 890MW plant is the second to resume operation after nuclear reactors were closed after the Fukishima disaster of 2011. The Sendai Nuclear Power Unit No.1 was opened last August.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and many senior figures in industry are backing nuclear power to cut fuel bills, despite widespread public opposition to atomic power.

“After restarting generating electricity, we will conduct the adjustment operation as increasing output gradually. Accordingly, the plant is expected to undergo the verifying the overall plant performance and return to the normal operation at the mid-November.” says Kyushu in a statement.
