Mobil pipeline to improve jet fuel supply for Melbourne Airport

Mobil Oil Australia Pty Ltd (Mobil) will construct a 2.7 km pipeline that will connect the company’s Yarraville Terminal to the Somerton Jet Fuel Pipeline. The project will help Mobil to meet the increasing demand for jet fuel at Melbourne Airport.

“Demand for jet fuel at Melbourne Airport continues to grow as both domestic and international travel increases,” said Andrew Warrell, Mobil’s manager of refining for Australia and New Zealand. “By providing a direct connection from Mobil’s Yarraville Terminal to the Somerton Pipeline, we will be able to more efficiently transport fuel from our terminal to Melbourne Airport, one of the area’s most important transportation assets.”

Work has commenced and construction is expected to be completed in approximately 12 months.

Mobil Yarraville Terminal has played a key role in Victoria’s fuel supply chain since 1926. It is the largest fuel storage and distribution terminal in Melbourne, and supplies about one third of Victoria’s fuel needs.

“Mobil remains committed to serving as a reliable producer and supplier of high-quality petroleum fuels to Victoria,” Warrell said. “In the past five years, Mobil has invested more than US$370 million toward improving the safety, reliability and viability of our fuel refining and distribution facilities in Melbourne.”

The terminal receives locally refined fuels via direct pipeline from the Altona and Geelong refineries, as well as imported refined fuels via the adjacent fuels wharf at Holden Dock. The Yarraville Terminal is Mobil’s primary distribution terminal for petrol and diesel fuel in Victoria, and supplies jet fuel to Melbourne Airport and other metropolitan and regional airports.
