Air Products signs PPA with RWE to power Rotterdam hydrogen plant

Industrial gases firm Air Products has announced that it has signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with RWE to secure renewable electricity for its existing hydrogen operations and new liquid hydrogen facility being built in Rotterdam.

The agreement will provide up to 75 GWh of renewable electricity annually. The electricity is supplied from the Karolinapolder onshore wind farm (located along the Volkerak near Dinteloord) and the Kerkrade solar farm (located in the province of Limburg).

In addition to the long standing hydrogen system, the renewable energy will power Air Products’ new liquid hydrogen facility. Significantly expanding Air Products’ existing liquid hydrogen product availability, the new liquefier will be the largest liquid hydrogen production facility in Europe when it becomes operational in 2027.

The PPA will support Air Products’ ability to produce hydrogen that meets the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) criteria for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) hydrogen.
