BASF constructs electronic-grade ammonium hydroxide plant in Germany

German chemical firm BASF has announced the construction of an electronic grade ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH EG) plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany, in support of wafer cleaning, etching and other precision processes in semiconductor manufacturing. This critical ultra-pure chemical will support the growth and expansion of semiconductor companies in Europe, ensuring a robust local supply chain for the production of advanced chips.

This development aligns with BASF’s ongoing commitment to creating supply chain resilience for the European semiconductor sector, crucial for maintaining technological competitiveness in a rapidly evolving market. Operations are expected to start in 2027.

With several new chip manufacturing plants being constructed or expanded in Europe, there is an increasingly strong demand for high-quality and high-purity semiconductor-grade chemicals, such as ammonium hydroxide.

This need has been accelerated by a close cooperation partner of BASF, who is currently building a new chip production plant in Europe. BASF is investing in the semiconductor chemical value chain based on mutual long-term customer-supplier commitments with its strategic partners.

NH4OH EG produced at the new plant will be essential for advanced nodes chip technology, enabling the next generation of semiconductors that are vital for key European industries, including Automotive, AI and beyond.

“We are thankful and proud of our customers’ trust in BASF to be a long-term strategic partner in their growth ambition in the region.” said Jens Liebermann, Senior Vice President, Electronic Materials at BASF. “This new investment not only further enhances our capabilities but also reinforces our commitment and our presence to supporting the semiconductor industry in Europe.” said Gops Pillay, President, Global Operating Division, BASF.

BASF adds it is a global leader in supplying the semiconductor industry with high-purity single bulk chemicals and specialised chemical formulations essential for semiconductor manufacturing.

The company offers a comprehensive portfolio of materials primarily used in semiconductor production processes, including cleaning, etching, photo, metal deposition, and chemical mechanical planarization.
