Gazprom, Japan discuss cooperation in LNG sector

A working meeting between Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee, and Toyohisa Kozuki, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Russia, took place at the Company’s headquarters.

The parties addressed issues related to the interaction between Gazprom and Japanese energy companies. A focus was placed on the prospects for broader cooperation in the LNG sector, including through the expansion of the Sakhalin II project.

In 2009, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant with the annual design capacity of 9.6 million tons was commissioned as part of the Sakhalin II project. It is the only LNG plant in Russia. The operator of Sakhalin II is Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd. (Gazprom – 50 per cent plus one share, Shell – 27.5 per cent minus one share, Mitsui – 12.5 per cent, and Mitsubishi – 10 per cent). On June 18, 2015, Gazprom and Shell signed the Memorandum to construct the third production train of the LNG plant. In 2015, the plant produced 10.8 million tons of LNG, exceeding its design capacity by 1.2 million tons.
