Samsung Engineering awarded PO project in Vietnam
Samsung Engineering, one of the world’s leading engineering, procurement, construction and project management (EPC&PM) companies, has signed a US$500 million range contract with Long Son Petrochemicals Co., Ltd. (LSP), a subsidiary of Thailand’s SCG Chemicals, for a polyolefins project in Vietnam at an official signing ceremony at the SCG Chemicals headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand.
The project is located in the Long Son Island, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province 30 km north of Vung Tau City and 70 km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The contract was signed by LSP’s General Director Thammasak Sethaudom and Samsung Engineering’s President & CEO Sungan Choi and the ceremony was further attended by Cholanat Yanaranop President of SCG Chemicals and Somchai Wangwattanapanich SVP of SCG Chemicals.
Samsung Engineering will deliver a High-density polyethylene (HDPE) plant at 450 kilotonnes/year capacity and a PP plant with the capacity of 400 ktpa. The HDPE plant which is the package B and PP plant which is the package C are part of the first petrochemical complex in Vietnam to be operated by LSP.
The HDPE and the PP plants are the first in Vietnam and scheduled to be completed by end of 2022.
LSP is Vietnam’s first petrochemical complex. The project will include a mixed-feed cracker, which can yield up to 1.6 million tonnes/year of olefins depending on the feedstock mix, and is expected to produce some 2.7 million tonnes/year of downstream products, including PE and PP.
SCG recently acquired an additional stake in LSP, making it a 100% owner of the US$5.4 billion project.
SCG’s wholly-owned subsidiary Vina SCG Chemicals bought the additional stake in LSP, raising its ownership to 82% stake, while the remaining 18% is held by Thai Plastic and Chemicals, another SCG’s subsidiary.
The scope of Samsung’s work comprises of process unit including a reactor, extruder, bagging machine as well as the work for the utilities and offsites (U&O), which contains the substation and cooling tower.
The LSP HDPE and PP plants will be the 15th project Samsung Engineering will execute in Vietnam. Previously Samsung built several hydrocarbon plants in Vietnam such as a fertiliser, PVC and gas production plant. Further, many industrial and environmental facilities were and are built in Vietnam by Samsung Engineering. Additionally in Vietnam, Samsung has delivered 11 PE plants and nine PP plants and provided additionally numerous of related polyolefins projects globally.
