JGC/Metso tie-up for lithium refining; exploring alkaline leaching method

JGC Holdings Corporation has announced that its overseas EPC operating company JGC Corporation has signed a nonexclusive MoU with Metso, which possesses a proprietary alkaline leaching method for use in lithium refining, to explore potential collaboration using this method.

Lithium is a critical mineral for which global demand is expected to increase for rechargeable batteries and other applications, but lithium and lithium refining technologies are found only in limited areas of the world, making it difficult to secure a stable supply. Moreover, the conventional lithium refining process, sulphuric acid roasting, requires highly corrosive sulfuric acid, neutralisation processes, and complex impurity removal processes. The process has long been recognised as posing serious environmental risks from its by-products and residues.

To address these issues, Metso has developed alkaline leaching methods to leach lithium from concentrates and other materials. This refining method is exceptionally environmentally conscious and sustainable.

Because it does not involve sulphuric acid, it reduces chemical consumption such as neutralisers and generation of residues. Residue generated as a by-product is chemically stable and can be reused as a construction material. The simpler equipment used also makes this approach more economical from the standpoint of lower initial equipment and operating costs.

As rechargeable batteries and similar products become more widespread around the world, this method of lithium refining holds promise in meeting growing lithium demand and supporting the energy transition.
