Samsung E&A awarded US$400 mn contract for US low-carbon ammonia plant

Samsung E&A said its affiliate Samsung E&A America has signed an engineering, procurement and fabrication contract for the US-based Wabash low-carbon ammonia project with Wabash Valley Resources (West Terre Haute, Indiana).

The US$475 million contract marks Samsung E&A America’s inaugural venture into low-carbon ammonia production, with a contract duration set for 30 months.

The ammonia production facility has received a federal permit for permanent CO2 storage. Once operational, the plant is expected to produce 500,000 tonnes/year of ammonia, while also possessing the capacity to capture 1.67 million tonnes of CO2.

The ammonia produced will be utilised primarily as fertiliser for farmland across the Midwest region.

Samsung E&A said it will leverage its experience in ammonia plant operations alongside its technologies, including digital twin technology, digital transformation initiatives, AI and automation, for the project.

Samsung E&A will collaborate with Honeywell International. The latter’s carbon capture technologies will be integral to the Wabash Valley Resources facility, optimising operations and minimizing emissions, thereby supporting the increased production of low-carbon ammonia.
