Moeve and ENSO partner to decarbonise industry with biomass, renewable gases

Spain headquartered integrated energy company Moeve and Spanish bioenergy solutions company ENSO are jointly developing lower-carbon energy solutions for energy-intensive industries, replacing fossil fuel-based cogeneration systems with alternatives based on advanced biomass and renewable gases. The collaboration will target sectors such as chemicals, paper and board, and food and beverage, which require large amounts of steam and thermal energy. The partnership will also develop renewable gases by converting biogas plants to biomethane production and exploring e-fuels, classified as renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs), using biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) captured at bioenergy facilities.

Moeve may act as an offtaker of these fuels, combining its energy supply and green molecule marketing capabilities with ENSO’s expertise in bioenergy, cogeneration and renewable thermal generation, as well as its experience in integrating carbon capture technology at its biopower plant in Garray, Soria, Spain, which was the country’s first biopower plant to capture and upgrade 100% renewable food-grade CO2.

Moeve, through its decarbonise offering, will expand its energy solutions for industrial and other business customers, particularly in processes where electrification is not always feasible.

The companies aim to reduce emissions and energy costs, improve energy security and enable investment in industrial energy systems. Their approach may include asset co-investment models that allow businesses to upgrade facilities without diverting resources from their core operations. The agreement also comes ahead of planned cogeneration auctions in Spain, which could create opportunities for industrial companies to modernise existing systems and adopt more efficient, lower-carbon technologies.
