Messer to invest US$40 mn in Vietnam gas expansion

Industrial gas major Messer is investing around US$40 million in two projects in Thai Nguyen Province, northern Vietnam, to expand production capacity and meet growing demand from the country’s rapidly developing semiconductor, electronics and high-tech manufacturing industries. The projects will add a combined 900 tonnes per day (tpd) of liquid-gas production capacity, increasing Messer’s total production capacity in northern Vietnam from approximately 1,100 tpd to 2,000 tpd.

The investment comprises a new 600 tpd cryogenic air separation unit (ASU) at Messer’s existing Yen Binh facility and a new 300 tpd nitrogen liquefier at the company’s Song Cong site. The ASU will produce nitrogen, oxygen and argon, while the nitrogen liquefier will increase the availability of liquid nitrogen for customers in the region.

The Song Cong nitrogen liquefier is scheduled to begin operations in mid-2027, followed by the new Yen Binh ASU by the end of 2027. The expansion will strengthen Messer’s ability to supply both existing customers and new manufacturing projects as foreign direct investment continues to flow into northern Vietnam.

Liquid nitrogen is particularly important to the semiconductor industry, where it is used for applications including wafer processing, inert atmospheres, cooling and contamination control. Oxygen and argon produced by the new ASU will also serve a broad range of industrial applications, including electronics, metal processing, manufacturing and other high-technology industries.

Messer has been operating in Vietnam for more than 27 years and has progressively expanded its production network. The company commissioned its Yen Binh gas-production complex in 2022 and its Song Cong gas-production facility in 2024. Messer’s Vietnamese operations produce and distribute nitrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide, electronic gases and rare gases, among other products.

According to Messer, the new projects will reinforce its position as a major industrial-gas supplier in Vietnam and provide additional capacity to support the country’s expanding high-tech manufacturing base. Messer’s ASU technology can produce nitrogen, oxygen and argon in both liquid and gaseous forms, with plant configurations tailored to individual customer requirements.
